The Scottish Government announced the extension of funding for 52 organisations working to tackle social isolation and loneliness, with £1.05 million allocated through to March 2027. The announcement, timed to mark the end of Loneliness Awareness Week, was made by Equalities Minister Simita Kumar. 

The funding supports a wide range of community-based activities such as warm spaces, shared meals, befriending services, social clubs, and outdoor activities. It is aimed primarily at older people, unpaid carers, disabled people, and young parents. 

This funding sits within Scotland’s Social Isolation and Loneliness Fund, launched in August 2023, which will have invested more than £3.8 million in total by March 2027, supporting at least 20,000 people across the country. 

The link to homelessness may not be immediately obvious, but it is well established. Social isolation is both a risk factor for homelessness and a consequence of it. People who lose community connections are more likely to experience the kinds of compounding crises like debt, mental health deterioration, and relationship breakdown that can quickly become housing crises. Warm spaces and shared meals are not peripheral welfare activities: for many of the people they reach, they are the thread that keeps a difficult situation from unraveling.
