A System Under Record Pressure: What the Numbers Say About Homelessness in Scotland and Across the UK
The individual funding announcements and charitable programmes making news in June 2026 are all meaningful in their own right. But they need to be read against a backdrop that is sobering: Scotland’s homelessness system is under greater pressure than at any point since modern records began, and England’s combined authorities are having to deploy significant new money just to meet existing need.
West Midlands: £18.2 Million for Birmingham and Coventry
The scale of the problem is not limited to Scotland. The West Midlands Combined Authority approved £18.2 million for the Supported Housing Funding Programme, with just over £13.4 million directed to Birmingham and more than £4.4 million to Coventry. The two areas identified as having the highest levels of need in the region. The programme runs from 2026 to 2029.
The funding will be used to create new supported housing provision for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness and rough sleeping. In Birmingham, this includes 27 new 24/7-staffed supported housing units and additional beds for hospital discharge pathways. In Coventry, the investment will create 66 new bed spaces and support around 215 people per year through a micro hostel for people with complex needs, dedicated mental health supported accommodation, and expanded domestic abuse provision.
